PROSTATE CANCER: THE BURDEN OF MEN, PART 2

“There’s no reason in the world why over 75% of the American people should be suffering from degenerative and deficiency diseases.

Diseases never come without a cause.

If a person is sick and ailing it is because he has been doing something wrong.

He needs an education on how to live a healthy life”

                  …  Jay M. Hoffman,  Ph. D. (Hinza) .

” Why do you always use statistics from The US…….?”

Someone asked me recently.

My answer was very simple:

The US has reliable  and readily available statistics,

Secondly, since we have adopted their food and lifestyle.

Therefore, whatever happens to them health-wise, has started taking place here in our country.

In many scientific literature, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is considered a normal condition of aging.

Also, they argue that the cause is unknown.

However, they believe that two important factors play a very significant role.

The factors are :

1) Aging

2) Family history ( Genetics)

Before diving into the details of the role of Aging and Family history, let us ask and answer the most basic question….

WHY DO THE PROSTATE ENLARGE?

The answer is very simple:

Prostate enlargement is due to inflammation of the prostate glands.

The second question…..

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF INFLAMMATION IN THE PROSTATE?

The answer is still very simple…..

Inflammation in the prostate is caused by oxidative stress.

You see, in Functional Medicine, we ask really hard questions that provide answers to the underlying cause of the health challenge.

Then what is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants.

It means when the free radicals overwhelm the antioxidants of the body, oxidative stress sets in.

It therefore means that if you have issues with your prostate or you want to prevent prostate issues, your attention should be focused on preventing inflammatory processes in your prostate by ensuring that oxidative stress is eliminated through adequate and optimal production of indigenous antioxidants.

So how do Aging and Family history play significant roles in prostate enlargement?

Aging is a factor in disease formation in the human body.

This is because most of the chronic diseases are associated with old age.

One of the key determinants of the aging process is the presence or otherwise of what is called :

The Antioxidant Defence System of the Body.

Antioxidants are compounds whose main role is to quench free radicals that damage our cells.

There are general two types of antioxidants :

The Exogenous Antioxidants and the Endogenous Antioxidants.

Exogenous antioxidants are those classes of antioxidants that we get from our food eg Vitamin C, A, E., Resveratrol, etc.

While the endogenous antioxidants are those that are produced inside our cells eg Glutathione, coenzymeQ10, etc.

The combination and interplay between these two classes of antioxidants, exogenous and endogenous, provides our body, the prostate gland with the needed protection from free radicals.

Without an adequate antioxidant defense system, you will be vulnerable to chronic diseases.

In fact, more than 75 different chronic diseases known to man are associated with low levels of antioxidants, especially the chief among them which is called glutathione.

From the age of 20, it has been shown that the production of glutathione begins to decline, an average of 1- 1.5 % every year.

For some others, it declines more rapidly because of their lifestyle, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, etc.

It therefore means that from age 50, for most men, they have lost their glutathione level by 50%.

This explains why oxidative stress sets in, giving rise to inflammatory processes that lead to enlargement.

It therefore makes sense that the number 1 thing you should do as a man is to ensure that your glutathione levels are optimal.

How do I ensure that….?

You may ask,

Relax, I will answer your questions.

However, in my next article, I will explain the role family history plays in prostate enlargement.
